Why this exists
Houston’s Black neighborhoods built this city. Today, rising costs, rezoning and quick sales are moving people out of them, day by day, one issue at a time. We support, perpetuate and archive these neighborhoods and the neighbors who live in them. Everyone can support us through this journey.
The archive
Every neighborhood has a story. Maybe it is yours, or a family member’s, long gone from the block. Tell us, and we will write it down.

Houston’s Black neighborhoods have popped up and disappeared over their 160+ years of Houston history. From the first few bricks, so mud wasn’t the path home, to mansions off the bayou and everything in between, the memories of our history run deep. The Polaroids, the undeveloped photographs and the distant memories are crowded out by the distractions of today. We chose neighborhoods based on history, community, cultural importance, but most of all PRESENCE. It is not just ours to choose. That power belongs to the neighbors, the people who actually live here. If you feel a neighborhood is missing, please submit a request for it to be added.

QR · SunnysideQR
I was born and raised in Sunnyside, Houston. I look back fondly on the neighborhood of yesterday. As an experienced real estate developer, I now know about the mechanisms that are pounding our neighborhoods. I have been instrumental in some of them. BLACKNUNITED is that, refocused, reimagined and reaimed.
